I don't remember having summer reading assignments until I started college, when I read my first Isabel Allende book, The House of Spirits, entering Simmons College as a freshman. I know I had summer reading to do for the following three summers when I transferred to UMASS Amherst but I can't remember a single title. I do know that as a hardcore, dedicated book worm, any kind of assigned or recommended reading was a favorite assignment. These days, I have only self-imposed reading assignments. I read one book each month for my book group, and I try not to begin it more than a week ahead of time. I try to read whatever my students are reading, which is usually a re-read but some of these books are so long in my past that it's almost like I am reading them for the first time. And I have an ongoing, on-growing list of want-to-reads on my goodreads page, mostly recommendations from Twitter, The Boston Globe, magazines, recommendations from friends (or strangers at the grocery store, airport, dog park... ) and anyone else who offers a good title or two. This summer I have a pretty good list of books that I want to read; some are waiting on my Kindle and others are on my summer reading bucket list. Here is a slideshow with some of the most recent additions to my list... I wonder who else is waiting to read them? Many are young adult novels, which I have been enjoying lately.
